What to wear to your engagement photo session
Updated: Jan 20, 2021

Choosing the right outfits for your engagement photo session doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple guidelines, you can easily create wardrobe options that will help capture you and your fiancé as your authentic selves. My session with Michelle and Nick perfectly illustrates my top tips for engagement session outfits in action.

Instead of matching your outfits to the exact same shade, try to choose coordinating colours. I recommend checking out Pinterest to find examples of colour schemes that you love. I love how Michelle and Nick made this work for their session—they chose cooler coordinating colours for the beginning of their shoot, allowing them to blend together with their dogs. Later, they switched to richer tones to complement the golden hour glow towards the end of their shoot.
Keeping your choices simple can make a big impact. By avoiding bright colours and patterns, this helps to keep the focus on you and your fiancé. I’m a fan of the simplicity of both outfits chosen for this engagement session. While the colour of Michelle’s dress is very trendy right now, the simplicity of the design gives it an almost timeless appearance.

I recommend sticking with neutrals and adding a pop of colour. By choosing primarily neutrals or earth tones, it’s easy to coordinate and not let the clothes overwhelm you. Nick’s white shirt is an excellent choice. As a neutral, it doesn’t clash with Michelle’s outfit or their surroundings, and it really stands out against the golden hour lighting.
When choosing your outfits, dress for your chosen location. Avoid wearing something that looks out of place in your surroundings, such as a coat in an indoor session. As well, pay attention to the colours of your surroundings. For example, if your session is in a canola field, it’s best to avoid wearing yellow. Michelle and Nick’s outfits work with their chosen locations and allow them to stand out in the best way possible.
The most important tip, however, is to be yourself. Photos are all about the people inside the clothing, and your engagement session is no exception. If these wardrobe guidelines seem silly to you and you want to wear your favourite neon pink dress, wear it! If your fiancé shows up to your session in a striped green and pink flamingo shirt he loves, you’ll have that memory to look back on and laugh about when your photos are displayed in your home.
